I started “The Fearsome Distance Between What We Say and What We Mean” in early 2009. It’s a work that exists somewhere in between a 2D illustration and 3D sculpture, created out of 15 layers of thick 50”x39” coventry rag paper and 5 sheets of foamcore. Hand cut designs, compartments, and figures throughout the different layers of sheets gives the viewer the impression of looking ‘through’ the drawing. Inspired by the ambiguous layers of meaning behind the things we say, the power and limitations of language, and the breakdowns in communication that can result.
The following is a collection of images that show the progression of this work over a 16 month period. It is currently unfinished.
